Summary

Information from Foreword of the associated Kindle edition
There are three main versions of the Diary: Version A, as originally written by Anne Frank; Version B, as edited by Anne Frank herself; and Version C, as edited and abridged by her father Otto Frank。 Version C is the one that is best known; however, all three versions were published in The Critical Edition。 This ‘Definitive Edition’ is for general readers that has been compiled by Mirjam Pressler from Version C, supplemented with approximately 30% additional material from Versions A and B as well as material from five pages that were discovered in 1998。

One of the most famous accounts of living under the Nazi regime of World War II comes from the diary of a thirteen-year-old Jewish girl, Anne Frank。 Today, The Diary of a Young Girl has sold over 25 million copies world-wide; this is the definitive edition released to mark the 70th anniversary of the day the diary begins。

'12 June 1942: I hope I will be able to confide everything to you, as I have never been able to confide in anyone, and I hope you will be a great source of comfort and support'

The Diary of a Young Girl is one of the most celebrated and enduring books of the last century。 Tens of millions have read it since it was first published in 1947 and it remains a deeply admired testament to the indestructible nature of the human spirit。

This definitive edition restores thirty per cent if the original manuscript, which was deleted from the original edition。 It reveals Anne as a teenage girl who fretted about and tried to cope with her own emerging sexuality and who also veered between being a carefree child and an aware adult。

Anne Frank and her family fled the horrors of Nazi occupation by hiding in the back of a warehouse in Amsterdam for two years with another family and a German dentist。 Aged thirteen when she went into the secret annexe, Anne kept a diary。 She movingly revealed how the eight people living under these extraordinary conditions coped with hunger, the daily threat of discovery and death and being cut off from the outside world, as well as petty misunderstandings and the unbearable strain of living like prisoners。

The Diary of a Young Girl is a timeless true story to be rediscovered by each new generation。 For young readers and adults it continues to bring to life Anne's extraordinary courage and struggle throughout her ordeal。

This is the definitive edition of the diary of Anne Frank。

Anne Frank was born on the 12 June 1929。 She died while imprisoned at Bergen-Belsen, three months short of her sixteenth birthday。 This seventieth anniversary, definitive edition of The Diary of a Young Girl is poignant, heartbreaking and a book that everyone should read。

Somehow I have gotten to this point in my life not having read this book in its entirety。 The writing by Anne was so engaging and powerful。 I know this book will stay with me the rest of my life。

All my children read this book and, finally, I read it too。 Despite knowing the story and how it ends, I kept hoping for some kind of miracle, some way out of what I knew had happened。 It’s like watching a fatal accident in slow motion。 The diary humanizes the atrocities。 They’re real human beings, not statistics。 The last entry is unremarkable except for the editor’s note: “This is the last entry。” They seemed so hopeful, so close to freedom。 The afterword, short and direct, is chilling as you All my children read this book and, finally, I read it too。 Despite knowing the story and how it ends, I kept hoping for some kind of miracle, some way out of what I knew had happened。 It’s like watching a fatal accident in slow motion。 The diary humanizes the atrocities。 They’re real human beings, not statistics。 The last entry is unremarkable except for the editor’s note: “This is the last entry。” They seemed so hopeful, so close to freedom。 The afterword, short and direct, is chilling as you learn the fate of each person。 A horrifying end。 。。。more

An iconic book, very interesting how Anna’s character was developing, entering teenage years, falling in love。 Peculiar that she wasn’t mentioning that much all the inconveniences of the way they had to live - she’s been focusing on other things - relationships with parents, other members of their new household。 It’s truly sad。。

This is such a good book。 I would most definitely read this again。

Seeing the condition of Palestine and savagery of Israeli Jews, Hitler seems to be very wise and right in whatever he did。 Hitler could see the dark that lurks beneath these Jews。 And the example is in Palestine where these Jews kill like animals。 Shame on Israel #FreePalestine

I read Anne during summer 2020 and it was a good choice of spending the summer days。 I really liked it and it felt like I was with Anne during her journey thanks to the simplicity in the way she wrote her diary。 I really felt bad at the end because her family got caught in a moment when it really did feel like they finally won freedom。 The only reason why i give it 3 stars/5 is that I felt uncomfortable during some of her detailed descriptions of her body or her relationships with the people who I read Anne during summer 2020 and it was a good choice of spending the summer days。 I really liked it and it felt like I was with Anne during her journey thanks to the simplicity in the way she wrote her diary。 I really felt bad at the end because her family got caught in a moment when it really did feel like they finally won freedom。 The only reason why i give it 3 stars/5 is that I felt uncomfortable during some of her detailed descriptions of her body or her relationships with the people who lived under the same roof。 。。。more

Remarkable on many levels。 Anne Frank's insight and self-awareness at 13, 14 and 15 are amazing。 I mean days after she turns 13 she writes this:" 。。。 I come to the root of the matter, the reason for my starting a diary: it is that I have no such real friend。 Let me put it more clearly, since no one will believe that a girl of thirteen feels herself quite alone in the world, nor is it so。 I have darling parents and a sister of sixteen。 I know about thirty people whom one might call friends 。。。 I Remarkable on many levels。 Anne Frank's insight and self-awareness at 13, 14 and 15 are amazing。 I mean days after she turns 13 she writes this:" 。。。 I come to the root of the matter, the reason for my starting a diary: it is that I have no such real friend。 Let me put it more clearly, since no one will believe that a girl of thirteen feels herself quite alone in the world, nor is it so。 I have darling parents and a sister of sixteen。 I know about thirty people whom one might call friends 。。。 I have relations, aunts and uncles, who are darlings too, a good home, no -- I don't seem to lack anything。 But it's the same with all my friends, just fun and joking, nothing more。 I can never bring myself to talk of anything outside the common round。 We don't seem to be able to get any closer, that is the root of the trouble。 Perhaps I lack confidence, but anyway, there it is, a stubborn fact and I don't seem to be able to do anything about it。" That comes on page 3, and I knew immediately I was going to love this book。 Having written that down here, and having just finished the book, I am realizing how poetic her final entry turns out to be。 Anne does not really dive into this "perhaps I lack confidence" piece in a deep way until that last entry, when she explains clearly that she feels her personality is sort of split into two: the Anne that she lets people see socially -- boisterous and talkative -- and the Anne that she feels she really is -- sensitive and deep。 She felt trapped, and although she badly wanted to be her true self around her family and her Secret Annexe crew, she worried that she would be laughed at or not taken seriously, of which she could not bear the thought。 The final entry kinda clarified things for me。 I had trouble making sense of how she would frequently say ppl in the house regarded her as unintelligent and full of nonsense given how obviously intelligent she was。 It's also part of the reason she had such a preference for writing over talking, as even with her sister she suggests they write letters to each other rather than talk directly when the subject is serious and intense。 The final thing I want to note is how, in May 1944, she writes: "You've known for a long time that my greatest wish is to become a journalist and later on a famous writer。 Whether these leanings towards greatness (or insanity?) will ever materialize remains to be seen, but I certainly have the subjects in my mind。 In any case, I want to publish a book entitled Het Achterhuis after the war。 Whether I shall succeed or not, I cannot say, but my diary will be a great help。" Given that it wasn't even Otto Frank's idea to publish the diary in the first place, I wonder if this passage did not exist if the diary never would have been published and Anne Frank could have been forgotten by history。 There were so many other gems of wisdom and insight that I can't do it justice in one review, but this was an amazing book。 。。。more

A book about love, self-discovery, family, and most importantly, a hard time during a war that had hurt many。 I cried many times throughout this book。 To think I have so much in common with a 14-years-old from 1944 in 2021 as an 18-years-old。 This is the third book I have read about the war and how the victims were living and seeing the world。 This by far, is the most personal one。

(pg。 146) 。。。more

I think this book showed a lot of different perspectives。 This book is for a more mature audience but I would say kids in middle-school would be a good age group for this book! "The Diary of a Young Girl" is a heartbreaking account of a young Jewish girl named Anne Frank who was forced into hiding during the persecuting times of World War II。 There is nothing more chilling than to read the own words of a child who wanted to escape to her diary as Germans invaded her town。 Before reading this again for ENGL 115, I recently facilitated reading this book aloud with a group of middle school students。 I will not forget the sadness I saw in their faces as they read her words "The Diary of a Young Girl" is a heartbreaking account of a young Jewish girl named Anne Frank who was forced into hiding during the persecuting times of World War II。 There is nothing more chilling than to read the own words of a child who wanted to escape to her diary as Germans invaded her town。 Before reading this again for ENGL 115, I recently facilitated reading this book aloud with a group of middle school students。 I will not forget the sadness I saw in their faces as they read her words and understood the gravity of the situation。 Anne Frank wrote in her diary of the events that transpired around her, just as any young child would do nowadays。 Perhaps the most chilling and impactful aspect of this book is the fact that a middle schooler could pick it up and read it as if it were in their own words。 Of course, the language is antiquated, but the fact that those things were happening to someone their own age and that they were reading first-hand what those events felt like is a powerful way to get a reader's attention。 The "Diary of a Young Girl" is an enthralling read and is an excellent addition to middle school classrooms as they start to grasp the heaviness of World War II and its effects on all who suffered during that time period。 。。。more

This nail=biter of a book takes the reader through a roller-coaster of emotions。 Set in the 1940's in the midst of the Holocaust, Anne Frank's recollection of the tumultuous time period。 I love books from this time period, but this one in particular was difficult to read。 Primarily because it recounted a real-life experience and had no fictional elements to it。 Though, historically, I knew the end-result, I had never read this particular book, so there was still an element of suspense and surpri This nail=biter of a book takes the reader through a roller-coaster of emotions。 Set in the 1940's in the midst of the Holocaust, Anne Frank's recollection of the tumultuous time period。 I love books from this time period, but this one in particular was difficult to read。 Primarily because it recounted a real-life experience and had no fictional elements to it。 Though, historically, I knew the end-result, I had never read this particular book, so there was still an element of suspense and surprise。 I would recommend this to older elementary students-especially those currently learning about this time in history。 Due to the nature of this book, it did contain some diversity。 。。。more
